One of the ways I fell most fulfilled in my life is by seeing forward motion. I’m a home school mommy, co-owner of a fitness company, and an aspiring “super wife”. Because of this, sometimes my personal dreams, wishes, and feeling of fulfillment get put to the sides so that I could emphasize the things that my family needs. But today my husband, Gabe, has Mia for one full hour. They’re downstairs happily playing Legos, so I am going to build a luxury headboard!

The materials I used:

  • particle board
  • foam
  • 1.5 inch wood screws
  • silver thumbtacks
  • dupioni silk
  • hot glue gun
  • screw driver
  • iron

This is a DIY project that I’ve had in my head for over a year. I’m excited to see what I can accomplish in an hour. I found an awesome piece of particle board in my garage from a desk we built. It’s not super sturdy. It’s not super long-term, but it’s super “right now”. It’s even the perfect size. It’s about a foot bigger than my bed on each side. This will allow me to get a look really nice luxury look! I also found leftover foam that I had laying around from some cushions I made for my backyard.

I also have a gorgeous piece of dupioni silk left over from curtains I made for the living room. This is dupioni silk is so gorgeous and it’s going to be so regal looking!

I am using this fabric out of my massive collection because it is the perfect to fit over the particle board that I have.

After thinking about logistics for a couple of minutes. I flipped the slides over to create seams, and ironed it down.

Next I marked it in place and created seams with my sewing machine. I ended up running a little bit short on the hour that I though I had. A quick sewing job turned into about fifteen minutes. Later I realized that I could have used thumbtacks to create the illusion of sewn seams. This would have cut my project time down quite a bit.

Next, it was time for some unexpected “impact” testing. As I diligently sewed my heart out inside, I left my king-sized project in the garage. Do you know what happens when you leave a project in the garage? A husband might park on top of it with a family car. Much to my delight I was able to salvage the poor thing with a heroic iron and a soft damp cloth! This is precisely how I will keep it clean as well.

Next I used 1.5 inch wood screws in diamond patterns to created a tufted look. They went into the particle board easily and stay in place very well. I decided to go for an industrial look and leave the screws exposed. 

I lined the seams with a package of silver thumbtacks that I had inherited when my neighbor moved. My 5 year-old helped me place them in the particle board about an inch apart.

Lastly, I flipped my masterpiece over. I completed the edges with a fold over, which is held in place by hot glue.

It’s finally done! It took a little bit longer than an hour to complete but I was able to accomplish the remaining 30 minutes with the help of my daughter in little ten minute intervals. The best part is that it survived being run over by the family vehicle. So it’s been a good day! I’m about ready to curl up with my hunky hubby and enjoy our evening.

Many of you ask us how to stay motivated once you’ve made a decision to make a fitness transformation.  It’s a decision to cause something very powerful in your life, and to not back down when defeat comes.

Everywhere around you there is a resounding message of complacency. It’s not because the world is a lazy place. This is because it human nature to take the easiest route available. This is hardwired to preserve our personal comfort. You hear from the voices around you that it’s normal to work a job that you hate and count the hours before you’re off for the day. If you’re living for the weekend, then you aren’t living. Really, you only get to enjoy Saturday which is one-seventh of your life. This is because you spend Sunday dreading Monday. On top of that, you will hear how normal it is to be 50+ pounds overweight and not be able to breathe walking up the stairs. But media will come to your rescue with “pills” to alleviate your depression, diabetes and heart failure. Yes, that’s typical, but it doesn’t have to be your story.

Permanent transformation calls for a complete mindset shift. If you’re not feeding your mind positive material, then you will automatically be fed what’s “wrong” by your inner critic and outside influences.

The pivotal point of staying motivated with physical transformation is personal development. This means feeding your mind, and “emotional fitness” before your physical fitness. They will feed off of each other. Personal development is reading or listening to audios that are selected to help you grow. It will help you create strategies and a positive mindset, in the areas that you want to develop. This will ultimately help you become who you desire to be.

For example if your weakest link is follow-through, you would read or listen to a book like “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy. If you need to grow in the area of self-confidence, you might go through “Awaken The Giant Within” by Tony Robbins. If you want to transition out of a job, you would go through a book like “The four Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss.

If your mind is primed, you have self-belief and a more positive outlook in life. This confidence will be fundamental in your subconscious decision to continue working toward your goals.

When we take responsibility for the things we don’t like about your life, we no longer buy into the societal “diagnosis”. Suddenly the walls we thought we were imprisoned fall down all around us and we are free to live limitlessly. All it takes in the courage to believe that we are in control of our own physical experience.

Focus on your inside before you focus on your outside. This is what will make transformation lasting.

Gabe and I have created an unimaginable life because we are constantly reading autobiographies of the people that have succeeded. We are relentlessly learning about innovation in fitness, nutrition, and business. We are watching YouTube videos daily that keep us motivated and inspired. We’re listening to podcasts and audiobooks about others that have succeeded with physical fitness, transformations, and business. We’re also committed to staying in a positive mind set which is producing positive results.

When you think about the physical goals that you set, look inside yourself and see what areas you need to grow. Physical fitness is only a part of the journey; total life fitness is a vital part of the journey. It’s going to affect the way that your entire life is perceived by your mind. When you have big dream in the gym emotional fitness is where it all starts. Psychology is 80% of your entire fitness journey. Do you ever get stuck in a funk and you don’t even know how you got there or why you’re not finding happiness?priscilla-tuft-luxury

Maybe nothing is bad in your life, yet finding happiness feels so bleak when everything feels anticlimactic and redundant. The way we act and feel can usually be an indicator of something deeper that is occurring in our emotional and spiritual life. Maybe you’re not eating right, maybe you’re not enjoying your friends. In this time we rush around trying to “fix everything”, maybe we let ourselves spiral down or abuse food to find a temporary quick fix.

Instead I challenge you to remember that this can be turned around as quickly as you can snap your fingers. It’s a decision and it starts with a shift. Finding happiness can be as simple as harnessing the power of gratitude in these times. What a vast and abundant universe God has given us. There is so much that we have to be grateful for. Remembering this allows you to connect to things that make you feel happy and FILLED!

If you can’t think of things that make you feel grateful right off the top of your head start thinking about the things that are simple. Consider oxygen, the air you breathe. With your eyes closed and no distraction feel the air move in and out of your lungs, hear the sound of your breath. Take a moment to bask in the fact that you’re able to breathe with no effort on your part. The ability to breathe was given to you at birth, outside of anything you had to do to “earn it”. God just thought enough of you to give you this ability because he loves you, regardless of anything you did. It was a gift that cost you nothing.

Begin to transform your thoughts with a gratitude list, write them down if it helps! Focus on those tiny things, let them grow into big things. Go outside, pick up a rock and just be grateful for its smooth edges and the fact that you have a masterful creator! Then let that gratitude grow by saying THANK YOU out loud! Say it 20 times if you have to in order to truly feel what you are verbalizing. Let these feelings grow by appreciating things around you the ivy that is growing up the fence in your back yard, your child breathing, your pet coming over to give you a wet kiss. Go deeper, do you remember that moment that you held your child in your arms the very first time or do you remember falling in love? Can you remember a promotion at work or an award you got that made you feel like you were doing a great job at something. Do you remember the release of serotonin during your last workout? Think of how good you felt during these times and let that feeling grow!

Let this moment of gratitude empower you to feel GREAT and connect to God in a time that you may otherwise have felt out of alignment. Finding happiness is on the other side of gratitude.
